Eight killed in two attacks in northwest Pakistan | News

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Associated Press) – Three soldiers and three children were killed in a suicide attack near a security forces vehicle in northwest Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan, authorities said on Sunday, while gunmen shot dead two members of the Sikh minority in Peshawar. .

The suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest near a car he was on patrol in a village near the town of Mir Ali in the North Waziristan Tribal Region.

The explosion immediately resulted in the killing of two soldiers who were in the car and the injury of another. Three children who were playing by the road were seriously injured. The statement said that all the injured were airlifted to the hospital by helicopter, but none of them survived.

No group initially claimed responsibility for the attack. The military said security forces and intelligence agents were searching the area for those who dealt with the bomb.

The area has served as a haven for local and foreign militiamen for years. The military carried out a massive operation in the area after militants attacked a military administration school in Peshawar in 2014, killing about 150 people, mostly schoolchildren.

Police officer Ijaz Khan said on Sunday that gunmen on a motorbike shot dead two Sikhs at a market in Sarband, a suburb of Peshawar, on Sunday.

Khan said Ranjit Singh, 38, and Kanwal Jeet Singh were shot multiple times while they were setting up a spice shop in Bata Tal Bazaar on Sunday. The attackers fled the scene.

No group initially claimed responsibility for the attack. Police are investigating the incident, although Khan said the men appeared to have been targeted because of their ethnicity. Sikhs are a small minority in the northeastern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and have been attacked in the past.

For its part, Pakistani health authorities have documented the third case of polio during the year in the country, in the city of Miran Shah, North Waziristan. Dr. Mohammad Shahzad, coordinator and spokesperson for the country’s polio control programme, said the deadly virus was detected in a one-year-old child. Last year only one case was detected in the country.
